Class Focuses on Charity Work in June 5th Meeting |
Our June First Friday meeting revolved mostly around the class' charity work, mainly the Fr. Abe SOS Fund. Ding DeJesus reiterated the need to build up this Fund, and not to send out urgent appeals for donations only at the time needed, so as to avoid a repetition of what happened with the recent death of Tony Villanueva. There was unanimous agreement. Also, Ding brought along bank signature cards needed to reopen the class' accounts with Bank of the Philippine Islands, to receive donations for the Fund.
Paddy Padilla was present, on a visit from the States, and handed Ding a check for $500 for the Fund. Totoy Llamas also gave a check for P5000 on behalf of Nick Ramirez. Benny Ramos has pledged P10000 for the Fund, in addition to P10000 each for Fr. Guido's Food for the Hungry and Espy Espeleta's Muntinlupa Project. Reuben Justo has similarly pledged about US$100 in honor of Tony Villanueva for the Fund. Earlier Eddie Sevilla pledged $1500 ($1000 for the Fund and $500 to go to Rody Castillo). Ding will issue an update on the Fund after he's able to open the bank accounts and these pledges have been received and deposited.
Again we're seeing the pattern of the same classmates coming to the fore in support of the class and its charity work. Can we expect some help from our other classmates as well?

Fely Abaya, Tony Abaya and Lily Carlos, friends of Gigi Carlos, widow of our late classmate, Doding Carlos, donated P85,000 each to our Gawad Kalinga Fund raising to 21 the houses ascribed to ADM50/54.
The new donations were solicited by Angie Salazar and the 3 checks totalling P255,000 were handed over by Mel Salazar to Gawad Kalinga last month.

In 1946 following the end of WWII, Ateneo, “bloodied, but unbowed”, reopened its Padre Faura gates. With its buildings lying in ruins, the school erected renovated Quonset huts behind the rubble to serve as classrooms, a chapel and living quarters for the Jesuits.
When Ateneo relocated to Loyola Heights in January 1952, the Padre Faura campus gave way to commercial buildings over the years. Now, the campus HS50 knows is gone without a trace and lives only in the memories of those who were there. In time, those memories will fade or the aging bodies cherishing them will return to dust.
This website will keep those memories of early postwar Ateneo alive. Click here to view Ateneo as it looked then or see class photos of HS50 as it progressed from 1st to 4th year or take a look at pictures of the batch's golden jubilee. Go to Memoirs to read other HS50 stories. |

The boys who would later be College 54 have the distinction of being among the first batch of students to move from their humble preserves in Padre Faura to the grandeur in Loyola Heights. For many, sadness mingled with anxiety as they bade farewell to Padre Faura and said hello to their new campus.
Their student lives were to be spent mostly in Bellarmine Hall. Here was where they sat down for lectures, recitations, quizzes and tests and where they had anxious as well as triumphant moments.
It was more than 50 years ago when, in cap and gown and amidst enthusiastic applause, they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Last December 2004 at Ateneo’s annual alumni homecoming, they celebrated their golden jubilee and capped the event with a party the next day. Click here to see what we have so far of College 1954. |

“Profiles”, the centerpiece of this site, keeps track of HS50 and College 54 by finding out how life has been for them since graduation. The process is not intrusive, as some may feel. It does not probe into one’s personal affairs. The graduates themselves tell their stories and disclose only enough to let us know how they’re doing. Many have rightly focused on their children and grandchildren who truly reflect what 5054 members have achieved. Even the widows of those who have passed have come forward and written poignant stories about their late husbands.
Many thanks to those who have thus far made our Profiles pages a captivating segment of our site. But the work is not yet done. Some are still holding back and there are many others from whom we haven’t heard, a lot of them because we don’t know where they are. We hope that they will somehow or other come upon this web site and get in touch with us. Starting August 5, 2007, Profiles can only be accessed by registered users. |
