BYE JUNE, HELLO JULY
Why, it's July and the second half of 2008 has started! July promises to be busy especially for our classmates in North America who, in the first week of the month, will see parades and fireworks (most likely on TV).

On July 1st, Canadians celebrated their nation's 141st birthday. Revelers across the country watched parades, enjoyed backyard parties or engaged in other festive activities. Scores became new Canadians when they took their oath of citizenship.

On July 4th, Americans will have their fill of fireworks, parades, baseball games and what not as the U.S. celebrates Independence Day. (The U.S. Declaration of Independence occurred on July 4, 1776 when the U.S. became independent from Great Britain.)

There was a time in the Philippines when July 4th was celebrated as the nation's Independence Day but in 1962, the then administration, in an apparent effort to correct history, issued an executive order making June 12 as the republic's independence day.

July 4, 1946 was the day the U.S. granted independence to the Philippines. June 12, 1898, on the other hand, was the day in Kawit, Cavite when General Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain. The move to correct history is disputed by some quarters. Click here to read an article arguing against the move. __________________________________________________________________________________
Shafts of Light (8) and (9)

In Shaft (8), Fr. Guido likens knowing God's love on earth to an overture and being in the Lord's everlasting kingdom, a symphony. In Shaft (9), Fr. Guido compares the righteous to those who see the stars that light their path to God's realm; the rest see the scars that cast them from our Lord's grace but may eventually be guided by the stars for their salvation.

In Memoriam

The death anniversaries of Doding (HS50) and Orlie (HS50, LLB 57) fall in July. We join their families in cherishing their memories.

Salvador "Doding" L. Carlos died on July 8, 2001
Orlando "Orlie" C. Ruiz on July 1,1980

"Our souls find rest in God alone."

High School 1950

new quonsetIn 1946 following the end of WWII, Ateneo, “bloodied, but unbowed”, reopened its Padre Faura gates. With its buildings lying in ruins, the school erected renovated Quonset huts behind the rubble to serve as classrooms, a chapel and living quarters for the Jesuits.

When Ateneo relocated to Loyola Heights in January 1952, the Padre Faura campus gave way to commercial buildings over the years. Now, the campus HS50 knows is gone without a trace and lives only in the memories of those who were there. In time, those memories will fade or the aging bodies cherishing them will return to dust.

This website will keep those memories of early postwar Ateneo alive. Click here to view Ateneo as it looked then or see class photos of HS50 as it progressed from 1st to 4th year or take a look at pictures of the batch's golden jubilee. Go to Memoirs to read other HS50 stories.

College 1954

new building The boys who would later be College 54 have the distinction of being among the first batch of students to move from their humble preserves in Padre Faura to the grandeur in Loyola Heights. For many, sadness mingled with anxiety as they bade farewell to Padre Faura and said hello to their new campus.

Their student lives were to be spent mostly in Bellarmine Hall. Here was where they sat down for lectures, recitations, quizzes and tests and where they had anxious as well as triumphant moments.

It was more than 50 years ago when, in cap and gown and amidst enthusiastic applause, they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Last December 2004 at Ateneo’s annual alumni homecoming, they celebrated their golden jubilee and capped the event with a party the next day. Click here to see what we have so far of College 1954.

Profiles Intro

“Profiles”, the centerpiece of this site, keeps track of HS50 and College 54 by finding out how life has been for them since graduation. The process is not intrusive, as some may feel. It does not probe into one’s personal affairs. The graduates themselves tell their stories and disclose only enough to let us know how they’re doing. Many have rightly focused on their children and grandchildren who truly reflect what 5054 members have achieved. Even the widows of those who have passed have come forward and written poignant stories about their late husbands.

Many thanks to those who have thus far made our Profiles pages a captivating segment of our site. But the work is not yet done. Some are still holding back and there are many others from whom we haven’t heard, a lot of them because we don’t know where they are. We hope that they will somehow or other come upon this web site and get in touch with us. Starting August 5, 2007,  Profiles can only be accessed by registered users.
