CASTILLO TASKED TO MANAGE CLASS GENERAL FUND |
by Ding de Jesus
At the Ateneo 50/54 First Friday meeting August 1, the class elected Rody Castillo to be a committee of one to manage the class' General Fund. The committee will be known as the SOS Committee. The Fund was established to help any classmate in distress, to lend or provide aid to the deserving among the families living in the Ateneo 50/54 cluster of 18 houses at the Ateneo Alumni Village at GK Payatas, and for whatever other charitable endeavors the class may opt to undertake. It will be invested in a fixed-income instrument of Rody's choosing, and will be subject to oversight by the class. Full Story ________________________________________________________________________________ Three More Articles About Fr. Delaney
Three articles, recently discovered, bolster the decision by HS50 to memorialize Fr. John P. Delaney, S.J. when it celebrated its golden jubilee in 2000.
One of them consists of excerpts from homilies delivered by the late Fr. Raymond V. Gough, S.J., whom HS50, especially class 4A, knew well. It's entitled "The Eternal Priest".
In another article, Onofre Pagsanghan, no stranger to Ateneans, writes about the U.P. Chapel and Fr. Delaney, the man behind its construction.
The author of the third article, Fr. Raymond Guiao, S.J. is the son of a former U.P. student who considered Fr. Delaney his mentor and friend.
These articles which were posted in other websites were uncovered when Felipe III Arevalo, son of classmate Binoy Arevalo, called our attention to Onofre's narrative. In the course of checking it out, we found other interesting articles about Fr. Delaney. ________________________________________________________________________________ August, Month of the Assumption and National Heroes
Catholics worldwide celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. In the Philippines the last Sunday of the month will be National Heroes Day. Araw ng mga Bayani is a day that's been set aside by the nation to pay homage to such heroes as Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Gregorio del Pilar and many others including the Unknown Soldier. Most of them bravely struck for the country's freedom from colonists.
Will Filipino heroes surface only when there are colonists? Today Filipinos are running the country but there is a crying need for a modern-day hero who'll lead the country out of its adversity. ________________________________________________________________________________ In Memoriam
We remember the following classmates whose death anniversaries fall in August and join their families in cherishing their memories.
Eliseo C. Bautista (HS50) who died on August 30, 1981 Jovencio A. Garcia (HS50), August 22, 2001 Rodolfo R. Torres (HS50), August 10, 1995 Mariano M. Yulo (HS50), August 17, 2007

In 1946 following the end of WWII, Ateneo, “bloodied, but unbowed”, reopened its Padre Faura gates. With its buildings lying in ruins, the school erected renovated Quonset huts behind the rubble to serve as classrooms, a chapel and living quarters for the Jesuits.
When Ateneo relocated to Loyola Heights in January 1952, the Padre Faura campus gave way to commercial buildings over the years. Now, the campus HS50 knows is gone without a trace and lives only in the memories of those who were there. In time, those memories will fade or the aging bodies cherishing them will return to dust.
This website will keep those memories of early postwar Ateneo alive. Click here to view Ateneo as it looked then or see class photos of HS50 as it progressed from 1st to 4th year or take a look at pictures of the batch's golden jubilee. Go to Memoirs to read other HS50 stories. |

The boys who would later be College 54 have the distinction of being among the first batch of students to move from their humble preserves in Padre Faura to the grandeur in Loyola Heights. For many, sadness mingled with anxiety as they bade farewell to Padre Faura and said hello to their new campus.
Their student lives were to be spent mostly in Bellarmine Hall. Here was where they sat down for lectures, recitations, quizzes and tests and where they had anxious as well as triumphant moments.
It was more than 50 years ago when, in cap and gown and amidst enthusiastic applause, they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Last December 2004 at Ateneo’s annual alumni homecoming, they celebrated their golden jubilee and capped the event with a party the next day. Click here to see what we have so far of College 1954. |

“Profiles”, the centerpiece of this site, keeps track of HS50 and College 54 by finding out how life has been for them since graduation. The process is not intrusive, as some may feel. It does not probe into one’s personal affairs. The graduates themselves tell their stories and disclose only enough to let us know how they’re doing. Many have rightly focused on their children and grandchildren who truly reflect what 5054 members have achieved. Even the widows of those who have passed have come forward and written poignant stories about their late husbands.
Many thanks to those who have thus far made our Profiles pages a captivating segment of our site. But the work is not yet done. Some are still holding back and there are many others from whom we haven’t heard, a lot of them because we don’t know where they are. We hope that they will somehow or other come upon this web site and get in touch with us. Starting August 5, 2007, Profiles can only be accessed by registered users. |
